Naas II 0, Navan II 1

Naas Hockey men's 2nd team started 2008 on a low with a unfortunate home defeat to Navan in the Junior Cup. Naas started brightly, with veteran skipper Peter Kings soon winning the home side's first short corner. Charlie Hill failed to produce a goal from the corner and the visitors cleared their lines. The game continued at a high tempo with play switching from end to end, Navan got little change out of the Naas defence in the first half due to strong play from Ciaran Downey, John Dooley, and Tony Falvey . Charlie Hill running the Naas mid-field generated a series of attacks with the Navan keeper being forced to save, conceding 2 more short corners but the Naas short corner duo were unable to score, failing to recapture their early season form. In the final minute of the first half Navan were unfortunate not to take the lead with a shot deflected off the post, much to the relief of goalkeeper Stephen Reynolds. 0-0 the half time score. Naas made tactical substitutions at half time with Paul Murray returning after a long absence and young Charlie Kings getting a run both joining the forward line. Navan came out with guns firing and thought that they had taken the lead after 10 minutes when a ball ended up in the back of the net! However, the umpire had spotted that the ball had been fired in directly from outside the circle; free out to Naas. 5 minutes later Navan scored when the ball came in high to the circle, the Naas defence relaxed expecting a free out, but the umpire waved play on as the ball was not dangerous, and after a goal mouth scramble the Naas right back turned the ball into his own net. Naas fought back bravely but the Naas midfield general was tiring but the young lads kept working hard with Marcus Blake and Niall O'Brien battling in midfield. P Kings broke with the ball from the half way line and to his and everyone's surprise beat the Navan defence to the circle where his shot was saved and Murray following up on the rebound failed to capitalise. More chances came Naas's way but no goals. The Final Score 1-0 to the visitors - Naas were disappointed having had the lion's share of goal chances, but will have to be much sharper in their finishing. Best For Naas: Niall O'Brien, Peter Kings.

Naas IV vs Malahide II

Icy conditions at Caragh Road on Saturday morning meant a delay in the game being started as we waited for the sun to thaw the pitch. The cold didn’t deter the teams’ enthusiasm to play the first game of 2008. Naas 4th XI who have been struggling in the league since the start of the season played a great game although it took the girls a little while to settle into the game.

Aoife O’ Sullivan took the pass back for Naas and the game was underway. Naas were under pressure at the start of the game with the Malahide forwards pushing up very quickly. The defence had a lot of work to do in the first 15 minutes but there were some great saves made by the goalkeeper Shona Brady. Naas pushed back to put pressure on the Malahide defence but they succeeded in pushing play back out of the D. There was great play between Jane Mahon in the centre and the forward line. Naas were unlucky not to score from some quick frees taken by Caitríona Coyle. Leaving the score at half time at nil all.

Both teams came out fighting in the second half, with pressure being put on the defence of both teams during the second half. Naas were unfortunately unable to score from the short corners taken during the second 30minutes. The final whistle blew after some great defence by Naas to finish Nil all. Whilst it wasn’t the result Naas were looking for the team will take great encouragement from the draw.
